About

Our son, brother and friend, Alex Baer, was killed in a car crash in Santa Barbara August 6, 2006. We cannot control events in this world, but we can control how we react to them. This blog explores the many facets of our experience dealing with Alex’s death and the events around it. We seek compassion, forgiveness and love. Friends really do not let friends drive drunk. Let us take back responsibility for one another and find new ways of making sure our friends get home safely.

Compassion is bringing our deepest truth into our actions, no matter how much the world seems to resist, because that is ultimately what we have to give to this world and one another.–Ram Dass

I want this imprinted on your mind, that today God loves the world through you and me.– Mother Teresa

    GETTING MADD:
The one time, in my youth, that I drank and drove, nothing happened. No one got hurt, and I made it to my destination– and I still cringe to think of how my life, not to mention the lives of others, might have been affected that day. Nailing the offender with a prison sentence will deter others from drinking and driving like putting dire warnings on cigarette packages will stop smokers in their tracks. In other words, it won’t. You never think it will happen to you. Unless… unless you are a teenager, and someone comes to your school and tells his or her story of what happened to you, scares the hell out of you and makes you a convert. In business, facts tell and stories sell. Put someone in jail for an offense for which many of us who live in glass houses were also once guilty, and you keep that person out of the very high schools where students, such as we once were, desperately need to hear that story. Please pass this on to the lawyer responsible for the appeal. To those who want blood, take a look in the mirror. I am not saying that there should be no other consequence– just, please, get this young lady into the schools. And if someone wants to write a book of stories such as hers, with the proceeds going to MADD, I’m willing to voluntarily edit such a tome. Click ‘contact me’ at my website.

I heard your story and an interview you gave for the first time tonight on a news radio station while driving home from work in Los Angeles. Upon arriving home, I quickly hopped on the internet to learn more.

I was so deeply moved at your grace and your compassion. This should be the lead story on each of our country’s news outlets. So glad the LA Times did a piece on it.

Susan, you are truly inspirational. I applaud the stand you are taking, and I wish you and your family and Jessica and her family great comfort …always.
